When it comes to physical currency there are basically 3 different stages that the metal can be in.
Stage 1 is the minting process, either at the beginning of each year with the new dates being released or throughout the year as demand has eaten up the supply and new coins are needed to meet demand.
Stage 2 is the delivery process. Once the coins or bars have been through the minting process they are shipped into the United States and delivered to the National Mint Distributors. Once the coins have been delivered to the Mint Distributors they are then shipped throughout the country to the National Mint Dealers.
Stage 3 is coins available for immediate delivery. Depending on the time of year or the overall supply and demand of the production chain, there are times that some coins are available for immediate delivery and others that may be back ordered in the previous stages.
